Rockfalls on Cima Falkner

Monday, 28.07.2025

Multiple rockfalls have occurred on both the western and eastern slopes of Cima Falkner in the Brenta Group.

As a result, all climbing routes and hiking trails directly affected by the area have been immediately closed, including the Benini via ferrata (No. 305) and trails No. 315, 316, and 331.

The decision was made during a technical meeting convened by the Department of Civil Protection, Forests and Wildlife of the Autonomous Province of Trento, with participation from the Geological Service, Fire and Civil Protection Services, Risk Prevention and CUE, Forest Services, the municipalities of Tre Ville and Ville d’Anaunia, the SAT (Società Alpinisti Tridentini), the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue, and the Federation of Trentino Volunteer Fire Brigades.

Following reports received in recent hours, a technical inspection was conducted this morning by the Geological Service with the support of the Helicopter Unit. It confirmed that the entire summit is affected by an ongoing geomorphological process, likely linked to permafrost degradation.

The inspection also revealed fractures showing signs of recent activity and ice within detachment niches, indicating an ongoing instability with potential worsening.

The mayors of Tre Ville (Matteo Leonardi) and Ville d’Anaunia (Fausto Pallaver) are issuing urgent ordinances to ban access to the trails starting from Passo del Grostè.

Due to the closure of trail No. 316, please note that Rifugio Tuckett is only accessible via Vallesinella–Casinei.

The area around Cima Falkner will be continuously monitored by the Geological Service and the Drone Unit of the Trento Fire Brigade.

All hikers in the area have been evacuated and informed at Rifugio Stoppani al Grostè and the Grostè chairlift top station.

We urge everyone to pay maximum attention and strictly follow the ordinances to ensure their own safety.
